צִיצִית
צִיצִיתf. (b. h. צִיצִת; צוּץ, v. צוּצִיתָא) 1) hair-lock. Sifra Aḥăré, Par. 9, ch. XIII (ref. to Lev. 18:3) שלא תגדל צ׳ that thou must not grow a lock (v. בְּלוּרִית). Zeb.26a; Yalk. Lev. 446 הוא בפנים וצִיצִיתוֹוכ׳ if the sacrifice stands (within the sacred precincts), and its locks (prob. the tuft of its tail) are without. 2) fringe, esp. the show-fringes (Num. 15:38). Sifré Num. 115 אין צ׳ אלא דבר היוצא ודבר כל שהוא by tsitsith is meant something that protrudes (hangs over) and is of a minute size; Men.41b. Sifré l. c. וצ׳ מן הגדילים, v. גְּדִילָה II. Men.39b פטורין מן הצ׳ require no show-fringes; חייבין בצ׳ require show-fringes; a. fr.M. Kat. III, 4 (19a), a. e., v. צִיצָהPl. צִיצִיּוֹת. Men.44a באו ארבע צִיצִיּוֹתָיווכ׳ the four fringes of his garment came into sight and slapped him in the face (reproached him for his sensuality, reminding him of Num. 15:39).
